Walking can be a fantastic way to get around London, you can beat the traffic whilst getting some exercise and taking in the view.
Our favourite method of transport in London. Follow one or more of our walks or simply wander. Cars HAVE to stop if you step onto a crossing and most will stop even if you jump out into the road. Jaywalking is not an offence, but natural selection can operate if you get too foolhardy.
It's worth remembering that London is built on a curve in the river (actually it's shaped like a banana) and simply walking in what looks like a straight line is often not the best route!
Travelling within central London on foot can even save time too as many landmark locations are closer to each other than you might think – ever changed lines to get the Tube between Covent Garden and Leicester Square (actually only 5 minutes walk apart)?
The Mayor is committed to making London one of the most walking-friendly cities in the world and plans are already underway to improve the pedestrian environment.
As well as getting around, walking can be a great way to see the sights, either independently or as part of an organised tour. See out City Guide Tours and Walking Tours sections to find out more.

Safety
Remember that unlike in many countries, cars drive on the left in the UK so be careful to look in the correct direction for oncoming traffic when you are crossing the road. It’s always a good idea to know where you’re heading and to take the same precautions as you would in any major city. Click here for London safety advice
